"Five axiomatic propositions of Canadian Nationalism vis-a-vis the Americans:

1. Boy, we hate Americans.

2. We really do.

3. Really.

4. I'm not kidding. We really hate them.

5. So how come they never pay us any attention?"

--Will Ferguson, Why I Hate Canadians, Vancouver: Douglas & McIntyre, 1997, p.105.

And I always thought I was an ordinary American One final question from the Pew Global Research Survey:

Q.42: "I will now read a list of groups. Which one do you think has the most influence on American policy toward other countries?"
The list:
News Media
Business Corporations
Christian Conservatives
Ordinary Americans

Sadly, in only two countries did a majority of respondents peg Jews as the #1 group driving American foreign policy (way to go Lebanon and Jordan!). But an honorary mention to Germany (12% of respondents), Spain (10%), France (8%), and good ole Canada (7%). I wonder how many respondents thought it was a trick question ("since the Jews control U.S. policy through the media, should I say "media" or "Jews"?) .

Other tidbits from that Pew global survey. By now you've seen themedia overviews of the results of the Pew Global Attitudes Survey. (Horrors, the U.S. is disliked by Europeans and others.) Here are some of the details you may not have seen:

Q10: "Did the January elections in Iraq lead you to have a more favorable or less favorable opinion of the U.S.?

Canada: 44% more favorable, 38% less favorable
France: 35% more favorable, 48% less favorable
Germany: 50% more favorable, 34% less favorable
Spain: 23% more favorable, 42% less favorable

In other words, significant numbers of Canadians and Western Europeans watched the Iraqis turn out in droves to vote for their future, and the lesson they took from this was that the U.S. was even more vile than they had thought before the election. With people like this, it's hard to imagine what the U.S. could do to get their approval.

Q.38: "If an innocent people were being killed by the army, the police, or another tribe, in another country, who would you trust most to do something to stop the killings?

Most countries chose the U.S. with a plurality of votes. But...
France: France (65%)
Spain: France (27%)
Lebanon: France (42%)
Jordan: France (11%)
Maybe we should ask the folks living in the Balkans what they think about this.
Must...stay...calm... Pay no attention to that Canadian smugness... Cool blue ocean! Cool blue ocean! Cool blue ocean!

Getting very angry... Scandal after scandal by the Federal government here, yet Canadians continue to crow about the superiority of their government to that of the infernal U.S.

Getting angry... Many stupid and annoying Canadianisms going on these days...
