"Five axiomatic propositions of Canadian Nationalism vis-a-vis the Americans:

1. Boy, we hate Americans.

2. We really do.

3. Really.

4. I'm not kidding. We really hate them.

5. So how come they never pay us any attention?"

--Will Ferguson, Why I Hate Canadians, Vancouver: Douglas & McIntyre, 1997, p.105.

Like a rocket! Canadian dollar = 66.13 cents at end of trading yesterday, up 0.47 cents.
Wish me luck and safety! Tomorrow morning I am going to try to brave the picket lines to drop my garbageb at the garbage dump. A neighbor says that the people at the Keele Street dump were extremely hostile when he delivered his yesterday, so that's naturally the dump I want to go to as well.

In the meantime, it looks as though the province is about to reconvene to order the strikers back to work, citing a "health threat" due to the pileups of garbage. The NDP legislators are thinking of forcing a delay to this order. I hope they do; it would likely doom their chances of holding on to their three Toronto-area seats next election. For that matter, if the strike were to persist through July 22, it would coincide with the visit of Pope John Paul II, and I would dearly love to hear the union reps explain why Torontonians shouldn't be angry with the strikers for messing up the Pope's visit.
