"Five axiomatic propositions of Canadian Nationalism vis-a-vis the Americans:

1. Boy, we hate Americans.

2. We really do.

3. Really.

4. I'm not kidding. We really hate them.

5. So how come they never pay us any attention?"

--Will Ferguson, Why I Hate Canadians, Vancouver: Douglas & McIntyre, 1997, p.105.

Where's Amnesty International? Expat in Japan John Monasch forwards this article on Japan's attempt to execute Tomomitsu Niimi, a "key player" in the Aum Shinrikyo cult. He asks, "for the people that are against [capital punishment], where are they now and why aren't they protesting and condemning Japan for it's 'barbarism'? Haven't seen anything on Amnesty International's site yet, just stuff about the U.S."

That's a good question, and I haven't been able to find anything on Amnesty's site about this either. What gives? Surely this organization wouldn't be engaged in selective outrage....
