"Five axiomatic propositions of Canadian Nationalism vis-a-vis the Americans:

1. Boy, we hate Americans.

2. We really do.

3. Really.

4. I'm not kidding. We really hate them.

5. So how come they never pay us any attention?"

--Will Ferguson, Why I Hate Canadians, Vancouver: Douglas & McIntyre, 1997, p.105.

Anti-Americanism -- the last refuge of the scoundrel politician. The Canadian political scene keeps getting weirder. After setting off a firestorm of criticism by sacking Finance Minister Paul Martin on Sunday, Chretien is digging in for a fight. Yesterday he dared Liberal dissidents to topple the government if they are so unhappy about the eviction of Martin. And then he attacked the leader of the chief rival party, Canadian Alliance leader Stephen Harper, as a tool of the U.S.:

Mr. Chr├ętien said defeating the government would leave the country with the choice of Canadian Alliance Leader Stephen Harper, upon whom he heaped scorn for promoting a closer relationship with the United States.

"Do they want to have Harper, who says that we should go on our knees in front of the Americans and if they kick you in the back you have to turn and say 'I hope, sir, that you did not hurt your foot?' " he asked disdainfully.

You know a Canadian politician is in trouble when he pushes the cheap-and-easy reflexive anti-American button.
