"Five axiomatic propositions of Canadian Nationalism vis-a-vis the Americans:

1. Boy, we hate Americans.

2. We really do.

3. Really.

4. I'm not kidding. We really hate them.

5. So how come they never pay us any attention?"

--Will Ferguson, Why I Hate Canadians, Vancouver: Douglas & McIntyre, 1997, p.105.

Away for two days. Darn it, there's so much I want to post about -- Canada's complaints about Israel's "disproportionate" response to the wave of bombings that caused more than 40 deaths and 100 wounded in the last six days (no word as to what Canada would consider a "proportionate" response); the concerns in France about anti-Semitic acts sparked by events in the middle east (in the paper today, an official lamented the strife on both sides and voiced fear that the strife within France would mirror that in the middle east; I think his parallel was closer than he realized -- the "strife" consists of a series of bombings; arson; and shooting by Muslims, and, on the other side, a counter-protest at Orly airport by Jews against a Muslim protest. Yet these are considered morally equivalent forms of "strife" in the article); etc. But I am off to Boston & Ohio for the next two days. Don't look for any new posts until Saturday at the earliest. And if my plane goes down, avenge my death.
